The G -Wagon

The Gelaendewagen was originally intended for military use and is currently serving  the forces of 64 countries all over the world including the Canadian Forces, that has over 1,000 units of the Mercedes G. Unlike  most other SUV's that feature an auxiliary front axle drive, the "G" is particularly designed as 4x4:
It has the same strength in the drive train to the front axle as it has to the rear axle, the transfer case is detached and moved further back to equal the length of the propeller shafts, just to name some examples. The civil version adds some features for better comfort,  but has the same outstanding qualities in terms of durability, reliability and off road performance - that's the Mercedes G!

As typical for Mercedes vehicles, the G-Wagon is optimized to the use its designed for: It is safe, reliable, offers lots of room for passengers and cargo and goes as far as you can expect a car to go. It climbs up and down up to 80%  grades, and is stable on lateral slopes up to 54%. G-Wagon fording a riverFording depth is 48cm (19in) (Manufacturer’s Specifications).  Certainly, the G is more designed for off-road performance than most other SUVs, especially when it comes to durability, yet it is the most practical car on the road to get your groceries, to bring the kids to their favorite sports events, or just to get to work safely whatever theG-Wagon towing a boot weather might be. Besides that, the G-Wagon offers a trailer tow capacity up to 3,500 kg (7700 lb) GTWR, depending on the engine choice.

Mercedes-Benz has a reputation for building long lasting, reliable Diesel engines, which are still very popular in the passenger cars after more than 20 years. Typically, the same Diesel engines that have been used for passenger cars were also available in the “G”, being an interesting alternative to the gasoline engines.

There are two series of G-Wagen available, each of which offered three different body styles and a variety of engine options. You can find detailed information on the early "G" following the link to the W460 Series, built until 1992, and the second generation, that has been introduced in 1990 and is still in production today, by viewing the page for the W463 series.  However, since the main technical specifications remained unchanged in the past 25 years, we created a summary of them on this page. See them by clicking here.

Having worked with 4x4s of different makes for quite a few years, we put together a list of what we believe are the benefits of owning a "G"

G-Benefits:

The Unique Appearance: With its Design, it stands out of the masses of other cars.

Individuality: There are, and will always be only few G’s around, so you have something unusual and recognizable, plus having a comfortable vehicle.

Safety: Mercedes builds some of the safest vehicles in the world and has always been a pioneer in occupant safety. Crash tests and real accident scenes prove it.

Usable Interior Space: Considering the compact exterior dimensions, the G offers a stunning amount of usable space, even for bulky items.

Good Investment: While the depreciation of used vehicles is generally much lower than on new ones, this is particularly applicable to used Gelaendewagen. G’s will always maintain a high resale value.

Reliable: Due to the sturdy construction, the G will take more bumpy roads or serious off highway use than lighter built SUVs. Looking at the results of hard core rallies in Europe, in average more than 50% of the top ten are G Models.

Technical Standard: The G incorporates technical features, that are still not reached by other manufacturers, e.g. the fully synchronized transfer case.

The Brand Name: The G is the only Mercedes-Benz car that versatile.

Diesel Option: If you are into Diesel engines, Mercedes-Benz is famous for it’s reliable and long lasting Diesel engines.
